Mahmud Jafri, owner and Managing Director of Dover Rug & Home, is a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist, and highly regarded community member. He came to the United States from Pakistan to attend the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA) in the 1970s. After earning his MBA, he joined an investment firm and eventually relocated to Boston in 1978. In 1989 he founded Dover Rug in Dover, MA, operating out of a small, 350-foot shop.

Making and selling fine, hand-knotted Oriental rugs has become something of a Jafri family business. In the late 1800s, his grandfather built a unique rug manufacturing company that opened the workplace to women, which eventually became a business model for the government. Mr. Jafri continues that successful tradition today. Less than 23 years after opening his first store, Dover Rug & Home is now housed in a 30,000 square-foot showroom in Natick – one of the largest rug and home design showrooms in the region.

Mr. Jafri shares his other passion – squash – with area residents as well, building a new state-of-the-art Dover Squash & Fitness adjacent to the showroom. The fitness club is the new home of The Dover Squash Academy and offers classes in dance and yoga.

Mr. Jafri strongly believes in giving back to the community and is active in promoting inter-faith and inter-cultural understandings, having sponsored several initiatives including co-founding the Islamic Masumeen Center of New England in Hopkinton. The winner of the 2013 Immigrant Entrepreneur Award (an annual recognition given by the Immigrant Learning Center) he is also actively involved with the Massachusetts Immigration Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) having twice been appointed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to his advisory council on immigrants and refugees.  Most recently, Mr. Jafri was named one of the 50 Most Influential People in New England, an annual award presented by INDIA New England and was the honorary speaker at the 2014 Naturalization Ceremony at Faneuil Hall where over 350 people from 35 nations were sworn in as citizens.

Dover Rug & Home has won numerous awards over the years, including the Best of Boston Home 2011, the CNC Reader's Choice award for 'Best Carpet Store' twelve years in a row, and was a finalist for the Family Business Awards and Retailer of the Year Award.
