Ruth Jacobs Malloy, Ph.D., Global Managing Director, Leadership and Talent, Hay Group

Ruth Malloy is Global Managing Director of Hay Group’s Leadership and Talent practice, with over 500 accredited consultants; providing thought leadership, new products and services and ensuring capability and high quality delivery to clients across the world.

Ruth joined Hay Group in 1991. For the last 20 years she has helped Fortune 500 companies across a number of industries achieve their strategies through the assessment, development, and alignment of their leadership and talent.

Dr. Malloy has worked with global Fortune 500 organizations in various industries. She has helped clients realize their strategies and create real impact through their leadership and talent. Ruth has worked with client to transform their cultures and leadership behaviors through the identification of key competencies, alignment of talent management processes, introduction of metrics, and the design of leadership programs and solutions to support the strategy. Ruth has led succession planning and executive assessment engagements for key roles and has helped clients calculate the ROI on their leadership and talent investments.

Areas of expertise

Ruth is a recognized global expert who has published and presented in areas including women in leadership, motivation and leadership effectiveness, and emotional intelligence. Ruth’s doctoral research, under the renowned Dr. David C. McClelland, focused on motivational and long-term predictors of successful women managers who broke the “glass ceiling”. She continued this research on diversity, as well as other topics of leadership and organizational effectiveness, in a prior role as Director of Research at the McClelland Center at Hay Group. Ruth has collaborated with a number of globally recognized academics including Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, Richard Hackman, and Roger Holdsworth.

Prior to undertaking her current position, Ruth led Hay Group’s Leadership and Talent direct business, which provides scalable on-line tools and e-learning to select and develop leadership and talent throughout the whole organization.

Ruth is co-author of “Leadership Run Amok” which was cited as the most popular article in the Harvard Business Review for 2006. She has also published in the Consulting Psychology Journal, Diversity Executive Magazine, and “The Emotionally Intelligent Workplace”, and presented at the A.P.A. and E.P.A. Her research is cited in a number of books including Daniel Goleman’s Focus, Working with Emotional Intelligence, Primal Leadership, and the landmark HBR article “Leadership that Gets Results”.

Ruth’s Education and Affiliations

Ruth has a B.A. in Psychology from Vassar College. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Boston University. She is a member of the Center for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations (CREIO), American Psychological Association (APA), Leadership Roundtable at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and the Boston University Executive Development Roundtable.
