Evelyn Berde

Evelyn Berde Self Portrait painting

The death of a child.

The destruction of a family.

The demolition of a neighborhood.

The deformity of a body.

The love of a child.

The love of a family.

The spirit and connection of a neighborhood.

The acceptance of a body.

My grit and resilience started in my childhood.

Growing up in the old “West End” of Boston, experiencing the drowning of my brother in the Charles River, living with congenital scoliosis, and witnessing the destruction of our family and our neighborhood opened my eyes and my heart to new ways of coping in the world.

Art has always been a healing force in my life.

Since graduating from Massachusetts College of Art in 1972: I have worked as a public school art educator, a Child Life Specialist at Children’s Hospital in Boston, and an artist-in-residence at schools, universities, hospitals and community centers.

My art is featured in galleries, museums and hospitals throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and South America.

My art incorporates every aspect of my life. I feel grateful for the opportunity to share my journey with you.
